INDIVIDUAL HOPI POTTERY

Colleen Poleahla Traditional Hopi Pottery

This is a large bowl made by Colleen Poleahla from the Hopi reservation. It measures 9.5 inches in diameter by 8 inches in height. It is decorated with strictly traditional Hopi designs that Colleen executes with great authenticity.

Colleen Poleahala is a member of the Fire/Coyote Clanmakes high quality traditional Hopi pottery. She specializes in black and white on yellow jars, black and red on yellow and black and red seed jars, and other pieces of traditionally Hopi pottery. She is prominently mentioned in the authoritative book Hopi-Tewa Pottery - 500 Artis Biographies by Dr. Gregory Schaaf who devotes more than a page to Colleen. She has also been written up in other publications on American Indian Pottery. According to Dr. Schaaf, ``Colleen Poleahla is an innovator. She shares an intimate relationship with her pottery. A potter, she explained, needs to express good thoughts and prayers. She talks to her pots in a good way.'' Colleen Poleahla's pottery is not easily accessible as she does not exhibit very much, and I feel privileged to be able to offer such a large one of her pieces to collectors.
