INDIVIDUAL JEMEZ POTTERY

Robert Patricio

Laura Gachupin Large Finger Tip Decorated Owl

This beautiful handmade owl was hand coiled and hand painted by one of the most famous potters of our time, Laura Gachupin from Jemez. This is one of Laura's famous owls superbly polished and decorated. The process of making the owl is painstaking time consuming. In particular, making the feathers is a tedious and delicate job. Each feather is made individually from a bit of clay molded between thumb and forefinger, then placed and pressed onto the ball of the body. This addition of feathers begins at the bottom row and proceeds upward row by row. Ultimately, a sponge is used to paint over the feathers and give them the extra red ending.

The owl measures 5 inches in height with about 5 1/2 inches in diameter. Its size makes it rather rare, as Laura makes fewer and fewer of these and usually smaller in size when she does. . An owl by Laura is an indispensable part of any serious collection of Pueblo pottery.
