Sofia Medina Large & Stunning Zia Pottery
This is a truly great pot made by a potter who is a legend in her own time, Sofia Medina from the Zia Pueblo. Sofia is arguably one of the most famous potters from Zia, and the matriarch of a line of potters that include such distinguished names as Marcellus Medina, her son, and her daughter Lois Medina. While Lois was alive, the mother-daughter pair of Sofia and Lois produced some of the most impressive and most collectable pottery at Zia. Sofia and Lois together and Sofia on her own have won numerous awards and are featured in several publications on Native American Art.
Unfortunately, Lois passed away. Sofia Medina is now again producing pottery that is of the highest quality structurally, innovative in its design, and solid in its decoration. The present offering is a large olla, very impressive, measuring 10 inches tall by 11 inches in diameter. It is decorated with the Zia bird and intricate geometric designs containing Kiva steps and geometric designs. A rainbow-like band runs around the pot, over and beneath the bird figures. But Sofia is advancing in years and we are fortunate to still be able to obtain some of her extraordinary work.
All the elements to construct this wonderful piece were provided by Mother Earth. The clay was gathered from around the Zia pueblo, was hand coiled into the olla, and fired over open ground (not in a kiln).
