INDIVIDUAL ACOMA POTTERY

Carla Claw Nampeyo Carved Corn Maiden Hopi Pottery

Carla Claw Nampeyo, Tewa, is the great-granddaughter of the famed Nampeyo, the granddaughter of Fannie Polacca Nampeyo and the daughter of famed potter Thomas Polacca. Like her father, Carla is now recognized as one of the best sgraffito potters in Hopi. Carla learned the art of pottery from her father and has risen to the top of her form. She has been making pottery for more than 30 years and is recognized as an outstanding artist of her technique, the art of deep-carved bas-relief design. Her pots are eagerly sought out by collectors and museums. Carla and her father, Tom, are part of the "new wave" in Hopi-Tewa contemporary pottery, and their work is highly sought after by collectors world wide.

The present offering is an opportunity to own a sample of Carla's excellent work. This pot measures 5 1/2 inches high and 8 inches in diameter and is a fine example of the sgraffito/relief technique that Carla executes in such masterful fashion. It shows a fine rendition of corn maidens along with geometric designs. The pot has designs even on the bottom! This is a detailed, multifaceted and truly stunning work of art.
