INDIVIDUAL ACOMA POTTERY

Frederica Antonio Eye Dazzler Acoma Pot

This intricately painted pot was hand coiled and hand painted by Frederica Antonio from the Acoma Pueblo. Frederica learned her art from her mother-in-law, Mildred Antonio, and has developed into a premier potter. Frederica paints evenly spaced fine lines that forms a web of squares along the surface of the pot whose size adjusts according to their position. Then fills in selected squares in a way that a final pattern emerges at the end. Watching Frederica work is a study in serenity and peace. Her work has earned her best of show, and first and second-place ribbons at state fairs and other exhibits of American Indian Art.

All the elements to construct this wonderful piece were provided by Mother Earth. The clay was gathered from around the Hopi reservation, was hand coiled into the olla, and fired over open ground (not in a kiln). This beautiful pottery measures 4 1/4 inches in height and 4 3/4 inches in diameter at its widest part, and it is a magnificent example of Frederica's artistry. It is decorated by a checkerboard-like pattern with bands running down the sides in which the checkerboards are also painted in red. The piece is in perfect condition, with no cracks, scratches, or other defects.
