INDIVIDUAL ZIA POTTERY

Elizabeth Medina Lidded Butterfly Zia Pottery

This is one of the lidded jars that Elizabeth Medina of the Zia pueblo executes in masterful fashion. This jar measures 10 inches high (including the lid) and 7 inches in diameter at its widest part. It is decorated with stylized versions of the Zia bird, or roadrunner along with sharply colored bands and floral arrangements. The striking lement of decoration, however, are the teo large butterflies painted to essential perfection. This is a rare design on Elizabeth's pottery. The decoration is simply elegant, arranged with a sharp eye for space along the surface of the pot. Note the stunning combination of traditional Zia designs with fineline work!

All the elements to construct this wonderful piece were provided by Mother Earth. As Elizabeth says in Fourteen Families, basalt is used for temper after it is broken up by freezing temperatures at the side of the river. This offering provides the collector of Zia pottery an excellent opportunity to acquire a sample of fine craftsmanship.
