Joseph and Nona Latoma Stunning Polychrome San Felipe Pottery

Joseph Latome is a member of the Corn/Water Clan in San Felipe, born on May 5, 1966 the son of Joe Latoma. On his father's side, Joseph is descended from a distinguished line of Zuni potters. He was taught the art of working the clay from his great-grandfather and since he started making pottery in 1992 has made a name for himself as producing usually large, impressively and strikingly painted pieces. His artistry has been acknowledged with awards at the New Mexico State Fair in 1986 and 1987.

Joseph makes mostly polychrome ollas, plates and other vessels, as well as replicas of artifacts. In addition he is a silversmith. He signs his pottery with an arrow under the letters S.F.P.

Joseph gathers his own clay from the Reservation hand coils his pottery, and paints with natural pigments. His wife, Nona, often helps in the project.

the present piece is polychrome olla signed by both Joseph and Nona. It is painted with striking and bold colors and has an opening decorated with Kiva steps and cloud-like parts. The pot measures 8 1/4 inches tall by 9 1/4 inches wide.
