INDIVIDUAL LAGUNA POTTERY

Marquis Dann-Lente Laguna Geometric Pottery

This very large handmade pot was hand coiled and hand painted by Marquis Dann-Lente from Laguna pueblo. It is decorated with old world geometric patterns familiar fro pottery made by the Pueblos a long time ago. This is a large pot measuring 11 inches tall by 12 1/ inches wide.

A full-blooded Laguna-Hopi Native American, Marquis is a member of the Water and the Kachina Clans. His inspiration to work the clay came from Preston Duwyenie from the Hopi Pueblo and May Chavez from Acoma Pueblo. They taught him all the fundamentals of working with clay using the ancient traditional methods handed down through the generations. Marquis specializes in hand coiled and hand painted traditional pottery gathering his own clay and colors within the Acoma Pueblo. He fashions his brushes from yucca stems and boils raw plants for the natural colors he uses to paint his vessels with birds, fine lines, rainbow bands, and geometric designs. He fires his pottery the traditional way, outdoors with cedar chips.

Marquis is well known to pottery collectors and the present offering is a stunning illustration of his talents. It is in mint condition. And is signed by the artist.

Sadly, Marquis was killed in a drive-by shooting the last week of May, 2009. The world of pottey lost an incredibly talented and highly promising young artist.
