INDIVIDUAL HOPI POTTERY

Jean Sahmie Sikyatki Parrot Hopi Pottery

Jen Sahmie a.k.a Sak' Honsee (her Hopi Name) was born in 1948, a member of the Corn Clan at Hopi, the daughter of Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo and the sister of notable potters Nyla Sahmie (Nampeyo) and Rachel sahmie. She has been active in making pottery since about 1965. She is widely known for the detailed and careful painting of her pots and the structural integrity of her pottery. These attributes have brought her wide recognition among collectors and her pottery is well sought after. Jean has won awards in essentially all major juried pottery competitions throughout the South West.

Jean is very interested in preserving the heritage of her ancestors and she strives to recreate ancient designs. The Sikiatki parrot design shown in the present piece is a prime example of such attempts. It is a reproduction of an ancient design shown in a book.

Like all her pottery, the present piece is hand coiled, hand painted in the traditional way with a yucca brush and fired in a pit.

The pot measures 3.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches in diameter.
