INDIVIDUAL ACOMA POTTERY

Star Pattern-Franklin Peters Acoma Pottery

For a young potter, still in his 30's, Franklin Peters has established himself as one of Acoma's upcoming pottery masters. Expectedly so for he was taught by two of Acoma's most accomplished potters, Florence and Rachel Aragon. His work is characterized by bold slips and colors, sharp lines and traditional designs flawlessly executed.

This exquisite piece is painted with a remarkably precise star pattern all around the pot, with a band of heart line deer ascending diagonally along the side. The pottery stands 8 inches tall x 10 inches wide, and is signed by Franklin.

Franklin is only in his 30's and shows great potential for a very high level of achievement through his work. This pot measures 6.5 inches tall by 6.5 inches wide and features both Acoma and Laguna graphics. Franklin Peters is a veteran Acoma potter who was taught to make traditional, hand coiled, hand painted Acoma pottery by two of Acoma's most accomplished potters, Florence and Rachel Aragon. His work has excellent shape and the fine, richly colored designs that one would expect from someone who learned from the Aragon sisters. FRANKLIN PETERS is from the ACOMA PUEBLO and he has been creating traditional handcoiled ACOMA pottery for about 15 years. He was taught the art of working with clay, first by his mother, Ella Peters and the by several ACOMA artists such as, Barbara and Joseph Cerno, Dorothy Torivio, Fredrica Antonio and Wilfred Garcia. FRANKLIN PETERS has emerged as an incredible artist with great attention to detail. He has stated that the "pottery itself is mother-earth.... Designs are about the world around us, which have meaning."
