INDIVIDUAL ACOMA POTTERY

Mimbres Cylinder Carmel Lewis-Acoma Pottery Seed Pot

This is a cylinder made by Carmel Lewis that measures 6 inches in height by 4 nches in diameter. It is decorated with the Mimbres Designs of birds (Acoma parrot) and flowers.

Carmel Lewis, Emma Lewis, Ann Lewis and Dolores Lewis are the daughters of the famous Acoma potter Lucy Lewis, who taught them the fine craft of gathering, preparing, shaping, decorating, and firing the clay into astonishing works of art. The Lewis family is carrying on the tradition of hand-made and hand-decorated pottery by maintaining the Mimbres motifs and patterns on their exquisite creations. These designs include heart-line deer, lightning patterns, stylized parrots, and others. The Lewis family are featured in almost every publication on pueblo pottery, such as Seven Families in Pueblo Pottery, Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery, American Indian Pottery 2nd Edition, Talking with the Clay, and Southwestern Pottery, Anasazi to Zuni. They have won numerous awards, such as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place at the Santa Fe Indian Market on many occasions, the Heard Museum show, New Mexico State fair, and a host of others.
