INDIVIDUAL HOPI POTTERY

Preston Duwyenie Shifting Sands Silver Inlaid Hopi pottery

Preston Duwyenie is a full-blooded Hopi and a member of the Reed Club who married Debra Duwyeny from Santa Clara and now works out of Santa Clara Pueblo. He has been active in pottery making form 1979 and is known for his micaceous clay white, orange and black-ware jars, plates, seed-pots and bowls, some with inlaid silver medallions. The ingot pottery is his most famous creation and the shifting-pattern motif of the present offering one of the most appealing. It makes one feel the serenity and peace of a glorious afternoon on a distant shore!

As Dr. Gregory Schaaf states in his authoritative book on Hopi potters, 500 Artist Biographies Preston Duwyenie's present pottery is unique in three main ways: the use of micaceous clay, the smoldering technique used to create black-ware the addition of silver medallion insets.

The pot is quite special because it has not one but THREE sterling silver inlays. The pot measures 7 inches wide by 2 3/4 inches tall and exudes an aura of delicacy and elegance.
