INDIVIDUAL KATSINAM

Mosairu or Buffalo - Jocelyn Vote, Hopi Katsina Doll

This Mosairu or Buffalo Katsina is the same as the Buffalo Dancer Katsina with the exception of the snouted mask that he wears. The eyes of this mask are bulging and are colored black. This katsina wears a colorful headband and holds a lightning stick in one hand and a rattle in the other. It dances as a prayer for the increase in that particular animal, as most game animal katsinas are.

Jocelyn Vote is from the White Bear Clan and is known for the precision and accuracy of presentation in her carvings of Katsina dolls. Jocelyn's great attention to detail gives this buffalo life-like characteristics. Her carving is both proportionate and precise.
