-
Tawa or Sun - Andrew Duwyenie, Jr., Hopi Katsina Doll
Andrew Duwyenie, Jr. was born on March 20, 1920 and passed away on January 25, 2005. His carvings are known for accuracy of detail and being true to form of the Katsina being represented.
From Barton Right, Kachina-A Hopi Artist's Documentary:
The Tawa or Sun Katsina is a representation of the spirit of the sun, although he may on occasion be called The Sun Shield Katsina. He appears in a role very similar to that of Nakiachop or Talavai, standing to the side with a spruce tree in his left hand and a bell in his right. Also, he may appear in a mixed dance with a flute in his left hand that is associated with him in many myths. He is not often personanted.
