INDIVIDUAL MATA ORTIZ POTTERY
-
Sabino Villalba Mata Ortiz Pottery. Horned Owl
This large effigy pottery measuring a full 11 1/4 inches high by 7 3/4 inches wide was hand formed by Sabino Villalba , from Mata Ortiz. Sabino has made a name for himself by forming and decorating plates with motifs such as spiders and bats. Here he gives us another side of his great talent with his Horned Owl. The body is decorated with geometric designs that reflect the patterns of ancient Casas Grandes pottery. It is polished to a mirror-like finish and is absolutely stunning up close. Sabino is featured on page 185 of the book The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz.
Mata Ortiz pottery is made the traditional way by gathering the clay, forming it into shape using the pitch method (not coiling), and firing it outdoors (not in a kiln).
