INDIVIDUAL MATA ORTIZ POTTERY

Reynalda Quezada Mata Ortiz Black on Black Effigy Pot

Reynalda Quezada is a sister of Juan Quezada and famous for her black on black pottery with animals like horned toads, lizards, etc, sculpted in relief over the surface of the pot. The horned toad motif on this pot represents her exquisite work quite well. Her prowess as a potter is attested to by the fact that other potters, her sisters Rosa and Genoveva, as well as her daughter Yolanda copy her style. Reynalda is discussed on page 168 of the well-known book The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz.

The present vase is decorated with horned-toads in relief and with impeccably executed geometric designs. It a large pot that measures a full 9 1/2 inches wide by 6 inches high.
