Eli Navarrete Polychrome Design Mata Ortiz Pottery In the by now famous book on Mata Ortiz pottery, The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz we read the following about Eli Navarrete Ortiz: Eli Navarrete Ortiz is one of the finest second-generation potters from the Porvenir tradition. His artistic ability and his application of paint are inspirational. While most potters from Porvenir repeat the same design over and overagain around the surface, Eli paints complicated designs that, when studied closely reveal interlocking animals and geometric forms in a Paquime motif. Sometimes he paints up to five animals hidden in rthe design and challenges the viewer to find them all. This incredible artist is responsible for reviving the use of color over black graphite and his work is now among the most widely collected around the world.
